New California Renewable Energy Milestone: One Gigawatt of Solar Installed to Date!

As reported in the San Jose Mercury News, the state of California has now reached a new milestone of one gigawatt of solar!

Just for reference, a typical house in California has a 4.0 kW system installed.

1,000 watts (W) = 1 kilowatt (kW)
1,000 kW = 1 megawatt (MW)
1,000 MW = 1 gigawatt (GW)

According to the San Jose Mercury Article, roughly 205 of the 1,000 MWs (1 GW) installed to date were installed in 2011 alone. That's over 20% of the total added just this year! This is despite the fact California's economy has been struggling to get back on its feet.

Roughly 600 MW were installed through the California Solar Initiative, the statewide program designed to help homeowners go solar by providing state rebates.
